Agentic Workflows: The Work Around the Code
I'll be at Into Azure on 10 November to talk about agentic workflows. Copilot can write the code, but what about all the investigating and checking that comes with it?
The question behind this talk is simple: I've reviewed a Bicep change, but what will it do to the customer's bill? Finding that answer means checking more than the code. I'll show how I'm using GitHub Agentic Workflows to help with that work, starting with a Markdown file and turning it into something we can run in GitHub Actions.
Who it's for: If you've seen agents writing code and wondered what else you could use them for, come along. You don't need to have built one before.
What we'll cover
- When is an agent actually useful? We'll look at where it helps and where I'd stick with a script.
- How do you build one? We'll write the task in Markdown, give it tools and boundaries, and compile the workflow.
- What does it cost? There's the Actions runner and the AI usage. We'll look at both, who pays, and how to set a limit.
- How do you keep control? We'll look at what it can access and how to check its answer before trusting it.
The demo: a Bicep change and a customer's bill
I'll walk through a Bicep change, the workflow run, and the cost report it produces. We'll check where the numbers came from and what information is still missing. If it can't work out a cost, I want it to tell me that, not make up a convincing number.
